Colonoscopy refers to a camera examination carried out on the large bowel or colon.
It is one of the most effective bowel cancer screening methods. The examination typically lasts for around half an hour. Some patients may choose to be given gentle sedation. If any abnormality is seen during the procedure, the endoscopist can biopsy these areas. This is not painful.
The indications for colonoscopy are rectal bleeding, change in bowel habit, weight loss, anaemia and abdominal pain. A colonoscopy may also be performed as part of a general health check.
