An anal fissure is a tear in the anal canal, often caused by straining.
Signs of a tear include a stinging or burning pain, and the appearance of a small amount of blood. Many fissures will heal on their own, especially if the cause is temporary. Topical treatments are available to numb the area and relieve pain while the fissure repairs itself. However, some tears can last for a long time. The fissures can also reoccur, or fail to heal properly. In this case surgery could be the best option.
